Toddlers and Textures

by Stacy on December 6, 2008

Recently, I stumbled onto a terrific site, Write, Mama, Write, authored by a charming mother named Beth. She uses her blog as a writing outlet and along the way – describes all the wonderfully creative projects her and her son do together.

I’m so happy she posted her Toddlers and Textures project and even more thrilled she’s agreed to let us feature it here on Kids Stuff World.

Like most children, Beth’s son loves to make things out of Play-doh. Fortunately for him, his mom has quite the imagination. After watching her son play indoors with play-doh and various textures, Beth took things up a notch. She took her son on a nature walk and had him collect items with interesting textures. Once they were back indoors, they pressed the items into bakeable modeling clay, she used Sculpey. Beth baked their new creations and just look at the outstanding results.

This simple project is suited for children ages 2 and up, and would make great gifts for just about anyone. The items pictured above were made using pine cones, parsley, sage, and fir needles but you could really use just about anything. Experiment with items you have laying around the house, things you find on vacation or for the zen lover in your life try using some stamped words – Hope, Love, Imagine, Dream.

The possibilities really are endless, try this one with your children, we’d love to see what you create.

How was your day?

We may be a day behind with this post, but Hey better late than never right? I’m hoping you had a chance to relax and unwind and enjoy the simpler things in life this Labor Day weekend. We had lots of aspirations of our own planned for the weekend (none of them actually coming to fruition), but all in all, I’m loving the way things turned out on their own.

Since I’ll be leaving soon on business, I wanted to take the time to really enjoy my children this weekend. And enjoy them I did.

Our weekend consisted of:
- Trips to the Park
- Homemade Smores
- A little Play Dough action
- Homemade Pizzas
- A Day Trip to the Zoo
- Bubbles in the Backyard
- Sewing a new pair of pajama pants for my daughter
- Babysat a friend’s son for a few hours, the kids LOVED it!
- Having a wonderful friend over for dinner off the grill
- Watching my son fall in love with wooden trains
- Potty Training with Tigger (more on this to follow)

See what I mean an absolutely perfect weekend, so c’mon tell me how did you enjoy your children over this holiday?

Potty Training? Try This

Trying to warm your child up to the idea of potty training? The first step is to help make the experience not quite so scary (and well…grown up). Here’s an easy way to relax the whole process: start by teaching your child’s favorite stuffed animal or doll how to go on a makeshift/pretend potty. Before you know it your child will be taking their playmate to the potty over and over again. Pretty soon they’ll want to go potty like their friend too.

You’ll need:
- a child in need of potty training
- A favorite bear, softie, or doll
- A pot, bowl, or children’s pottie
- A positive attitude

Good Luck and be sure to let us know if this technique works for you
