What My Home is Saying

by Stacy on May 23, 2010

When we bought our first home last year, I almost went crazy pretend decorating. I stayed up way too late pouring over every online home store and decor catalog I could get my hands on (I was overseas remember). I made power points, mood boards, wish lists, you name it, I was obsessed; I was a woman on a mission and I had a plan. Fast forward a year later and well, not much on the decorating front has been done.

My home is still pretty much a blank slate waiting to be adorned. I wanted to live in it brand new for awhile and wait for my home to tell me what it wanted me to do. I wanted to see how we used each space, where the clutter landed (and boy did it ever), and what objects appealed to me as time went on. Well, my home has been talking A LOT lately and here’s what it has been saying,

My home has asked me for:

This unit is supposed to hold shoes but I think it would be much more helpful in my house as a magazine, newspaper, meal plan, coupon, kids artwork kind of holder. Of course, it would need to be cleaned out regularly since I don’t think it would hold too much, but that might be a good thing. It would keep things from getting too far out of hand. This also gives me a place to drop my keys, maybe add a hook to hang my purse and hey, look at that I even get a mirror to check myself before I rush out the door with the kiddos – BONUS!

I’m big in to recycling, but I live outside the city’s area of responsibility for pick up. Every Tuesday, I haul a mini van full of recyclables to my nearest Air Force base and sort the items when I get there. I got these color-coded bags as a gift for Christmas, but they’re too large to just have sitting out in my kitchen. I have a ton of cabinet space that I’m not taking advantage of, so I thought I would clear out 1 or 2 lower cabinets and create my own little recycling center. Hopefully, this will help my husband remember to throw his cans & bottles into the bags and keep me from being a trash digger outter :)

Now that my counters are cleared off, my home would really like a place for the kids to be able to interact with me while I’m in the kitchen. This side of my counter is perfect for mixing up a quick batch of muffins, rolling out pizza dough, (making homemade ice cream :) )or just watching Mom do her thing. They’re not quite ready to sit on stools and eat anything but well, that time will be here before I know it …

Our bedroom is bigger than we ever really needed it to be and as a result it has become the dumping ground for storage, out of season clothing, important papers and furniture we’re saving to give to a family member. Nothing that makes me want to retreat there or actually even spend any time in there. I had a chat with the hubs tonight and we have agreed since all of our shows are finished for the season, we will devote 30 min to an hour every week to sorting through our mess. Starting in the bedroom and working our way all the way to the garage :) Yay!! He has no idea how much trouble he is in or what BIG plans I have for our space. (I’ll share my plans for the bedroom next …)

Toddlers and Textures

by Stacy on December 6, 2008

Recently, I stumbled onto a terrific site, Write, Mama, Write, authored by a charming mother named Beth. She uses her blog as a writing outlet and along the way – describes all the wonderfully creative projects her and her son do together.

I’m so happy she posted her Toddlers and Textures project and even more thrilled she’s agreed to let us feature it here on Kids Stuff World.

Like most children, Beth’s son loves to make things out of Play-doh. Fortunately for him, his mom has quite the imagination. After watching her son play indoors with play-doh and various textures, Beth took things up a notch. She took her son on a nature walk and had him collect items with interesting textures. Once they were back indoors, they pressed the items into bakeable modeling clay, she used Sculpey. Beth baked their new creations and just look at the outstanding results.

This simple project is suited for children ages 2 and up, and would make great gifts for just about anyone. The items pictured above were made using pine cones, parsley, sage, and fir needles but you could really use just about anything. Experiment with items you have laying around the house, things you find on vacation or for the zen lover in your life try using some stamped words – Hope, Love, Imagine, Dream.

The possibilities really are endless, try this one with your children, we’d love to see what you create.

Remember the Whimsical Sunrise Nursery?

by Stacy on November 23, 2008

Do you remember this post? This was our first Kids Room design project – featured back in August. At the time KSW didn’t have many readers, we were less than one month old, but now just a few months later we have a strong followership show we thought we would revitalize this room.

A Little History

On Aug 4th, we promised to design a unique, affordable nursery inspired by Urban Outfitter’s Spectrum Chandelier. After 10 days of hand-selecting each and every item, we presented you with…the Whimiscal Sunrise Nursery. This nursery was designed for everyday people with everyday problems. We developed a room that exudes color without ever needing a drop of paint. (perfect for our readers who live in apartments or houses they can’t paint) We also chose pieces that could be personally customized for our DIY readers. (Hint, try using the wall decals to decorate the toy box. Line the back of the dresser with scrapbooking paper for an even more individual look. Why not sew a few color fabric shapes onto the wardrobe to add that last pop of color.) And finally, we planned this room to really maximize its space. (Notice every piece of furniture is focused on stoarge- the crib has a drawer underneath, multiple colored shelves to hold stuffed toys above the toy box, a wardrobe, a bookcase and even a back of the door organizer.)

And now for the best part, we designed this room all for a budget under $1,000!! Can you believe it? Want to see how we spent the money?
