Wishing you a hometown 4th of July!

by Stacy on July 3, 2012

God Bless America red white and blue party ideas

It’s been a long, long time since I had the opportunity to celebrate Independence Day the good ole fashioned way. More than eight years overseas and 15 years since I’ve spent one at home, and I had begun to believe the my children would never know what it was like to grow up in a small town.

Back home, the beginning of July is always a major cause for celebration — a tribute to summer and all it’s fruitful bounties. You might drive up in a pickup truck loaded down with corn and drive away with several bushels of squash or tomatoes or blackberries in exchange. These get together’s on families farm were as much a celebration of life as they were for the 4th of July. My Grandfather’s birthday fell on the 2nd of the month, and growing up I liked to pretend the fireworks and music were all on his behalf; a heavily decorated Army veteran, he was and still IS our hometown hero.

Fast forward a couple decades – my husband and I both now hometown heroes of our own, without a hometown anywhere in sight. Those fond memories of cousins and barbecues and neighbors and all that small town love had all but faded from my memory … until this year. I came upon an opportunity to host a kids craft party with my friend Amy with less than a week’s notice. We called on our local blogging pals and then it hit me, I may live in one of the largest cities in the United States, but community is where you make it.

Our friends came out in full force and suddenly, all those small town feelings came rushing back to me. Mothers were hanging on the porch, sharing stories and sipping sweet tea & lemonade. Kids whom had never met were playing together outdoors, entertaining themselves for hours on end. Thrifted and handmade decor, a few tasty cupcakes and group craft projects made this a really special day for me. I hope with all hopes that these sorts of get togethers continue, spiral even … and that my children, who have no cousins, will grow up knowing what it feels like to play among good friends, have a community that cares about them, and people they can count on whenever they’re in need.

That’s the US I know and love,
and the one I want my children to know as well.

Happy Independence Day everyone
God Bless the USA and San Antonio, the biggest, little city I know.

more details on our party coming soon,
let me know in the comments if there’s anything in particular you want to know more about

by Stacy on January 28, 2012

We’ve been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately, and today we decided to bake up a special surprise for you.

IMG_1401_2 At first, we thought … CUPCAKES!!

But, … they didn’t last very long …

So instead Sweet thought, maybe there are a few kids out there who also like to bake cupcakes and play dress up and spend extra special time with their Moms — know any kids like that?

Sweet thinks maybe they might like an extra special apron of their own.

Life in an Instant: Never a Dull Moment

by Stacy on August 12, 2011

The kids have been keeping me super busy lately, exploring and adventuring and making friends all over the place. It’s hard for them not to, wherever they go, they strike up conversations, make others smile and occasionally put on quite the performance.

Breakdancing at the local froyo
[insert caption here] Let's see what you come up with
What a bunch of goofballs

Check out these crazy pics — tidbits of our trip to a local frozen yogurt shop. Sweet decided it was a great place for breakdancing and brought in quite a crowd with her killer moves. Seriously, she cracks me up!

Day at the water park + slushies get a big thumbs up!!

The days are long and HOT around here, but we’re still managing to make the most of them. This requires lots of fluids. Usually of the frosty kind. And waterparks, don’t forget waterparks! We met some of our friends at a cute little ranch in Bandera and made a day of splashing and playing and lazing on rivers. We just HAD to stop at Sonic on our way home and sample some happy hour slushes. Raise your hand if Sonic Happy Hour is your favorite kind of happy hour? Me, Me!!
When it's just too hot outdoors, have a picnic under the table!
When it’s too hot to picnic outdoors, we say bring the picnic — indoors! and while you’re at it why not do it UNDER the table. Makes for an uber cool other wise boring lunch and if done in PJ’s, you get extra points.
Big Brother teaches Little Brother
We haven’t been able to water our lawns for months, thanks to serious drought restrictions in our area, but the boys are doing their best to keep things green. No, really … we are starting down that potty training path … yet again, and big brother has been quite the helper. Things get easier the more you do it I guess. Little loves to use the potty just like he loves to do whatever else his brother and sister are doing!

Girl Time

Nothing like a little girl time to make the ones you love feel special. First, cookie baking wearing our favorite aprons (psst, did you know we make them for you guys too?). Next, some Carebear hugs! Finally, a trip to the Farmer’s Market to sample some of the finest cold limeade there ever was!
It's Family Pizza Night!! Time to make the dough
Finally, there were homemade pizza nights. Lovingly kneaded and rolled by these goofy chefs.
Gorgeous Girlies!
This kid loves him some @katesfrosting pimento cheese
Days at the park with the bestest of buds and Pimento Cheese sammies & cupcakes smashed in ice cream that really just can’t be beat.

There you have it. Our life, in an instant. Never dull, although may be a bit too sweet. I guess a little more sugar than normal is alright when you’re as active as these guys are. So, how was your week? What tasty treats did you sample or meals did you make with your kids?

Doesn't get much sweeter than Kate's @katesfrosting
