Shared Spaces: Boy Girl Rooms

by Stacy on August 5, 2010

I have quite the affinity for shared bedrooms. I love everything about the whole concept – sleepovers that never end, the closeness between siblings it encourages, the space it saves in your home, the lack of space for unnecessary junk in the room itself, the decorating potential … it all excites me.

Depending on who you talk to one might tell you I am an only child. Or, some might tell you I have more brothers and sisters than you can shake a stick at. Truth is, it’s a little of both. I was adopted. Several times over. How does one get adopted several times over you ask? Painfully. Adoptions don’t always work out, families get divorced or long for children of their own. Skipping from one family to the next until I found the one that was right for me made me much of the person I am today and sharing rooms with so many children during my time in foster care, transition homes and finally amongst my own inherited family made me love the concept of bunking with others even more. No matter how alone I felt on the inside, there was always someone there with me at night to talk with, find solace in and just be myself around. It’s these positive experiences I hope to share with my own kids.

My children share are small (4,3 & 1) and the oldest two share rooms now. If the rooms were a bit larger, I’d move all three of them into one room. If the house were larger … I’d have more children and move all of them into one huge bunk house of sorts. How, do we do it you ask? By keeping the bedroom a place used only for reading and sleeping. All of our toys stay in the playroom. Our bedrooms are a place we got for quiet time, for naps and for cuddling just before bedtime. This will change as they grow older, I’m sure — but for now it leaves me plenty of time to decorate their space in a truly unique way.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be asking for your help in decorating their shared space and I thought I’d use this post to open up the discussion. Let’s talk about shared spaces a bit, how do you feel about them? How would you make a shared space work for both a boy and a girl. And of course, eye candy!!

Ok, your turn!
Now you tell me, Have you ever shared a room with a sibling? Looking back on it now are you glad that you did? What are some reasons you will pair your children in the same room or even do whatever it takes to give them each a room of their own.

And as for the eye candy … Which one is your favorite? What do you notice about all of these rooms that makes them similar? What do you think is the secret to making a boy/girl room look cohesive and planned instead of mismatched and overloaded with colors and themes?

Adorable DIY Nursery Decor

by Stacy on August 27, 2009

Who needs PB Kids or Land of Nod when we could all be creating fantastic works of art like this for our little ones? {on a dime too, I might add}

This graphic DIY rug looks like something created on a hip HGTV design show. Perhaps this year’s Design Star contestants should take a cue from its creators, this would have been a vast improvement to most of the items chosen for the kids rooms they designed last week.

Something about this whimsical, zebra print rug makes me want to crank one out in every possible color combination. Can you imagine the possibilities?

A huge Thank You to The Storque for the detailed how-to instructions, please keep amazing articles like this one coming.
{Forever Yours, Stacey}

Sweet Tweets from Raspberry Kids

little_chipipi_red_robin_wall_stickers_1

This gorgeous Little Chipipi Red Robin wall sticker collection was sent my way shortly after arriving to Texas. With no furniture in the house and plenty of time on our hands, my children and I have become VERY fond of these adorable decals. I wasn’t quite sure how these delicate looking stickers would hold up to being handled by two aggressive toddlers, but they have certainly proven their durability in this house. (Word of Caution: The dragonflies are a bit more delicate than the other pieces) Still, our final verdict: Not only do these decals look amazing but they can take a little abuse too.

rrset_ws03

My youngest (2) loves to stick them all on top of each other, only to immediately rip them apart again and then stick and restick to the walls- over and over and well, you get the idea. My oldest (3) prefers to take his shirt off and stick them all over his body. He gets such a kick out of it and admittedly, I do too. Perhaps one of these days, I’ll manage to have a camera nearby to catch him in action. I’m sure Grandma would appreciate a shot of that. I’m happy to announce the decals are still rather sticky after several play dates with my children and even after being ground into our brand new shedding carpets (I know, what’s with that?) quite a few times. Repositioning is a breeze and the creative possibilities are endless.

Why We Love Them: Besides the fact they’re adorable, the Little Chipipi wall decals are a mom made product that delights the interior designer hiding inside of us AND satisfies our need for a bit of whimsy in the kids bedroom. Also available in butterflies and an adorable surfer-vibe transportation theme, check them out at the always Fresh and always Fun, Raspberry Kids. (Love this store)

Cost: $65 ($55 w/ discount)- While priced higher than average wall decals on the market, these stickers provide a whimsical, artistic feel to the room instead of the novelty commercial look of some others we’ve tried. Note: Prices on site appear in Canadian Dollars, we have done an estimated US conversion for you. Get a 15% discount if you purchase by Earth Day with the coupon code: motherearth15

If you like this, Try These: The Little Chipipi Red Robin Wall Stickers would look great paired with these accessories we found during one of our favorite past times, shopping online.

The deadline for entries is Monday, April 13, 2009.

Stumped on how to go about entering? Well, here’s my take on it:

————————————————————————————————

Three Reasons my kids deserve to win:

1. My children have no furniture ~ Yep, I said it NONE. If you’ve followed the site you’ll probably remember we recently moved all the way from Germany to Texas. Making a continental move like that, really forces you to choose which items you’ll be taking with you to your new home. Since my kids were transitioning from cribs to real beds and everything we had was a mish-mash of hand-me- downs, we decided to leave it all behind. Now that we’re in the States, the kids could really use some new furniture. In fact, right now they’re sleeping on mattresses on the floor with little piles of clothing stacked all around them. C’mon WFB, help us out, and FAST (why? See #2).

2. There will soon be three of them ~ My third child is due at the end of April. A three year old, a two year old, and pretty soon a newborn with no furniture. I know, I’m a bit ashamed myself. Still, that’s a lot of furniture to acquire at a time when splurging on things like children’s furniture just isn’t in the cards. Again, WFB – we could really use your help

3. We’ve already made great plans for it ~ Don’t believe me? Check out this adorable toddler’s room thrown together on a super tight budget.

Toddler Spring Garden Party Room

Note: The colors of the actual items are much brighter than they appear in these images

Lavender Gingham Panels from Target ~ $6 (Darn, these SOLD OUT)
LED accent lamps from Target ~ $11
Ikea Lack Bookshelf ~ $129
Garden Party Sheet Set from Target ~ $20 SOLD OUT
Flower Wall Peg set from Target ~ $11
Ikea Lack Table ~ $13
Scandi Bean Bag from Target ~ $30

If I win, I’ll probably grab a box spring from Craigslist and then attempt a DIY picket fence headboard.

For a cheap way to finish off the look, I’ll use tons of these around the room

nylon_flowers1

The paper flowers are from Oriental Trading Co, 12 for $5.99 – I found nylon flowers similar to these at Hobby Lobby in all sorts of bright colors really cheap

That’s a complete girls room fully decorated for just $230, that’s a price tag I can live with

More Sunshine and Whimsy

by Stacy on February 5, 2009

I’ve got a real treat for you today, the fabulous Ez of Creature Comforts was gracious enough to let us share her Daughter’s Bedroom Makeover.

Just when you thought you’d seen the last of the Whimsical Sunrise nursery, along comes this extremely elegant, chic .. even mature ~ mellowed out version of the theme. This room, designed for a 10 year old, is much more subdued and even more whimsical. It makes me feel like she’s a budding artist living inside of Etsy.

Allow me to introduce you to a little slice of lemon meringue heaven:

Creature Comforts Kids room

I know, gorgeous right? Ez claims she’s a “lazy decorator” and says she spent only $350 on this extreme makeover. I’m left speechless and wishing she could come on over to my house – I’d let her go hog wild for $350. Imagine what she could do to the rest of your home? Or the KSW Green Living Home for that matter …

Just look at the amazing effort that went into selecting the details for this room:

Creature Comfort Kid Details

I just love that striped pillow ~ a few other favorites are the gilded mirror and the little blue desk

Gilded Mirror
Little blue desk

I’m such a sucker for painted wood furniture

My favorite part about this whole makeover is that she lays it all out for you, step-by-step, AND provides you links to almost everything in the room. She also links to her flickr album where she’ll likely add even more info as time goes on. Personally, I’d like to know about the cute paper dolls by the gilded mirror ~ see post.

Head on over to Creature Comforts now to check out the full story on this fantastic Before and After Makeover. Bravo Ez, Job Well Done!! Seriously, let me know went you want to come over and do my house ~ did I mention it’s brand new and I’m moving in 2 weeks? And I’m 7 months pregnant?
