A homemade magic shell recipe using just 2 ingredients!! So cool, hardens up just like the real thing

I almost feel as if I should start this post with an apology.

Because once you find out how easy this magic shell recipe is and how delicious it is–you’ll probably blame me for the fact that you’re going to need to stock up on ice cream, STAT. Not to mention crack down on that exercise routine, tomorrow. But I promise, it will be totally worth it.

In my house, Sunday nights are ice cream nights. It’s a tradition I picked up from my grandmother and have happily adopted as my own. She was the mother of 15 kids and Sunday night dessert meant breaking out the 5-gallon tub of vanilla ice cream, (Yes, they come that big) her recipe for chocolate chewy sauce, and a whole lot of ice cream bowls. Chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream were the standard in her house. You couldn’t have one without the other. They needed each other. It was the only way to do ice cream right.

Her chocolate sauce recipe is one I make often. If you come to my house for dinner, chances are pretty good that if I really like you, I’ll make it for you. It’s like a rite of passage.

But recently, I decided it was time to start exploring a few more chocolate options for my vanilla ice cream. Can a girl really have too many chocolate sauce recipes? Definitely not. One of the first things on my list to try was a homemade Magic Shell recipe. My kids have always loved the crackly goodness on top of their vanilla bean ice cream–but there was something about that waxy after taste that just didn’t sit right.

So I set off to see if I could make my own.

And when I finally settled on a recipe, it was almost criminal how easy it was. And as if that wasn’t enough, it was just like the real thing–magical and crackly and delicious–minus the waxy mouth. Not only is this magic shell recipe simple, it also reheats beautifully. That means you can have it any day of the week.

So here it is. The simplest chocolate sauce recipe you’ll find anywhere. You’re welcome. I’m sorry. Enjoy.

You wont believe how simple it is to make homemade magic shell! Bookmark this magic shell recipe now, you'll thank me later

– 1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
– 1/2 cup coconut oil

In a heavy-bottomed saucepan combine 1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of coconut oil (in its hard state). Melt slowly over medium heat until smooth and completely combined. Pour warm sauce over cold ice cream and let it work its magic. Pour leftover magic shell sauce into a small glass jar and store in the refrigerator. To reheat, place in simmering water bath on the stovetop until liquid again. Stir and serve.

Oh my gosh! Make your own magic shell chocolate sauce with just 2 ingredients!! This is dangerous.

My writing and creative projects for families have appeared in print and online and I’m currently working as a freelance blogger and social media coordinator for BabyCenter.
