where life, love and motherhood connect

3 emails about prostate cancer that can literally save someone’s life.

Remember these words,

“I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honour you all the days of my life.”

It seems the older I get, the more I understand what they mean. Twenty-something us and thirty-something us are two entirely different couples.

Us, 10 years later
Same old us, just 10 years later.

We are both disabled veterans now. We have faced numerous surgeries together, child births, pains that come and go, but don’t go as quickly as they used to, the probability I will need a hysterectomy soon … (story for another day) and a full medical retirement at this point.

The steroids and cortisone shots are more normal these days than nights on the town, but being true to him and keeping us in good health is still my number one priority. If there is anything I can do to ensure we both make it to actual retirement age, you can bet I’m going to do it! and I bet you feel that way too.

Here’s a scary fact for you:

Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related death in the United States, accounting for more than 30,000 deaths each year.

The American Cancer Society estimates 1 in 6 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

That’s a H-U-G-E percentage.

What can we do about this?

For starters, we can get them tested.

Many men can survive prostate cancer, there are more than 2 million prostate cancer survivors living in the United States right now! but the best thing we can do for our loved ones and our families is to help educate them on the disease, so they can understand treatments options and just how aggressive prostate cancer can be.

It starts with Polaris.

Prolaris is a genetic test for prostate cancer that combines traditional risk factors with molecular assessment. Prolaris is the only test that measures how fast prostate cancer cells are dividing. The information obtained from this test greatly impacts the treatment choices that someone diagnosed with Prostate cancer would choose.
