“In the hole lived Mr. Fox and Mrs. Fox and their four small Foxes.”

“We will make,” said Mr Fox, “a little underground village, with streets and houses on each side – separate houses for Badgers and Moles and Rabbits and Weasels and Foxes. And every day I will go shopping for you all. And every day we will eat like kings.”
– Roald Dahl, Fantastic Mr Fox

I’m delighted to share with you a few of Emily Carew Woodard’s whimsical interpretations of one of our favorite stories, Roald Dahl’s classic Fantastic Mr. Fox appearing as an opera in San Antonio this week.  The characters are so detailed and true to life, we haven’t been able to get them out of our heads!

Re-imagined by illustrator Emily Carew Woodard and composed by the Artistic Director of OPERA San Antonio Tobias Picker, this will be the first Fantastic Mr. Fox opera in more than a decade and the first performance for OPERA San Antonio in the new Tobin Center for Performing Arts.

Fantastic Mr Fox opens at the Tobin Center on Tuesday, Septmeber 23rd and runs through Sunday, September 28.
Tickets on sale here.

We had a chance to speak with the cast over the weekend and find out a bit more about this beloved children’s tale turned opera. Described by cast and crew as a playful storybook come to life, Pickers’ interpretation of the Roald Dahl classic promises to be a delight for children and their parents!

The cast tells us it follows more closely to the book than the Fantastic Mr. Fox movie most of us are familiar with, but also eludes to a few extra characters the crowd is sure to love.

“I think I have this thing where everybody has to think I’m the greatest. And if they aren’t completely knocked out and dazzled and slightly intimidated by me, I don’t feel good about myself.” – Roald Dahl from “Fantastic Mr. Fox”

I can hardly wait to experience this performance first-hand!

Saturday evening’s performance will be simulcast from inside the opera house directly onto the wall from the Riverwalk Plaza. This is to be the first simulcast event of it’s kind and OPERA San Antonio has filled the seats with children from the Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, Boysville, Jewish Community Center, the Witte Museum and Youth SA. Sponsor H-E-B will provide refreshments.

I have 4 extra tickets to this special, invitation only event. If you’d like to attend, please leave me a comment here or on Facebook letting me know. We’ll choose a family Thursday night. Hope to see you there!

More about the event:
This performance will be held on the river walk plaza of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts (100 Auditorium Circle) on September 27. The performance begins at 7:30 and will last approximately 80 minutes. There will be chairs set up in the plaza (general admission) and doors will open at 6:30.

  • This looks like so much fun. I think my son would love it. We, my wife and I, are trying to get him to step outside his comfort zone, so this would be good for him to see something new and fun.

  • OMG! Pick me! Pick me! I would LOVE to have a girls night @ the Opera, as I love exposing P to our rich SA culture. Thank you, Stacy!!

  • My family and I would appreciate this experience to its fullest. Our daughter loves theater (on VHS) lol. She tells us stories of going to see “real people” doing shows. This would be literally a dream come true and an awesome surprise. Thank you so very much for this chance.
